Nerve repositioning may be needed in order to properly place implants in your mouth. This procedure is typically performed on the lower jaw and is recommended when the two back molars or second premolars are missing.
When you receive a nerve repositioning procedure, our oral surgeons will move the inferior alveolar nerve to ensure that your implants can be properly placed. This is the nerve that gives feeling to the lower lip and chin. First, our oral surgeons will access the jawbone to expose the nerve and vessel canal. The nerve and vessel bundle in that area will be isolated and gently pulled out and to the side. Your implant will then be placed and the nerve bundle repositioned over the implant. Finally, we will fill the area with bone grafting material and close the surgical site.
Nerve repositioning is considered a very aggressive approach. There is usually some post-operative numbness of the lower lip and jaw, which should dissipate slowly. In some cases, however, this numbness may be permanent. Our oral surgeons will always consider less aggressive treatment options before recommending a nerve repositioning procedure.
Depending on your condition, nerve repositioning, implant placement and bone grafting may be performed separately or together. You will need to rest for a full day following your procedure, and we recommend limiting your physical activity for one week after treatment.
